Lives in Beijing

Speaks English fluently, Mandarin a little, still learning

Registration: 01 October 2009

About

I'm from California, I have been living in Beijing since January 2010. I have been to China a few times before, but for vacations and temporary stay. This time I am living and working here permanently, which makes things different than before. I have tried to learn Chinese on my own, using various books and programs, I would say I am at Chinese level 1. My goal is to become fluent in speaking, I think that might take 10 years, haha. I don't have many friends in Beijing who can speak English fluently, I would be happy to meet some here :) I consider myself easy-going and open to almost anything, feel free to contact me here, I would be happy to know you.
Interests: photography, nature, video games, travel, basketball, food, movies, , music, animals, culture, technology

Software Package for Learning Mandarin by Ottontarion

Can anyone recommend a software package for learning Mandarin Chinese? I have seen high praise for Rosetta Stone. I would like to take a course but will probably need to wait a few months before I can make the time for some night lessons.

Rosetta Stone is ok, I bought it before I came to Beijing. I have completed all 3 levels 2 times through, I would say its a good way to get an introduction, but I'm not very impressed as far as being able to speak. It helped sure, but I think ... Read More

Ugly incident at Shin Kong high end store by ptl

I am wondering if anyone would be interested in publishing a story of a recent ugly event that took place in Shin Kong Place. Just to give you a gist: the event took place at the indoor playground area on the 5th floor of Shin Kong place. My 4-year ...

I would be interested in hearing the other side of the story, usually one-sided details of an event are rarely the truth, no disrespect intended. As far as the shouting from Chinese, um you should be used to that if you have spent any time in ... Read More

Bringing a car into China by chinagbud

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I am from California and I am moving to Beijing in January and I was wondering if anyone out there has brought their car with them into China. I've noticed that cars in China are pretty expensive and I'm ...

Thanks for your input everyone, I really appreciate it. It probably isn't economical to bring a car to China, but it would be cool to be the only guy in the country with a Pontiac lol. I guess I will just buy a car when I get there...GM sells more ... Read More
