My expat journey
Dhahran, USA
I lived in faculty housing at the University of Petroleum and Minerals where my husband taught. I taught at Dhahran Academy. I swam and read lots and had fun working and raising a family.
I was a feature writer for Arab News, the English daily paper in the kingdom. It was fascinating work. I also taught at Dhahran Academy. Great kids at that school.
I liked the diversity in the kingdom. As "an honorary gentleman," I got around a lot and got to meet a great variety of people: camel drivers, merchants, nannies, business people, cabinet ministers, even an Apollo astronaut. There was always lots happening. And I liked the extreme heat. I loved learning the language and the hospitality of the women.
It would have been even better if I had a better command of the language. I didn't like the political system.

I moved here right during the Civil War in Lebanon and set about fixing up a 13-15th century house.
I'm on vacation when here.
It's lovely to live in a hamlet when everybody is getting along. Real community--and all that wine and good times.
I love it all. I still summer here.

I lived on the campus of the American University of Beirut, in a flat overlooking the Mediterranean, one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. I swam in the sea and hiked in the mountains and went to a zillion art openings.
I taught freshman and sophomore English at the American University of Beirut.
I loved the dynamism of the people, the easy cafe life, and the ease of making friends.
