Navigating friendships as an expat in Indonesia

Hello everyone,

Moving to Indonesia reshapes many aspects of life, and friendships are often one of the biggest changes. Whether you're maintaining lifelong bonds back home, building new local relationships, or forming connections with fellow expats, friendship in expatriation comes with its own joys and challenges. We invite you to share your experience to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats:

Have you found it easy to connect with fellow expats or locals in Indonesia? Why or why not?

Have you noticed cultural differences in the way people make friends or share personal matters?

Since moving to in Indonesia, how have your friendships back home evolved? Do you ever feel 鈥渙ut of sync鈥 with friends and family in your home country?

How do you deal with the temporary nature of many expat friendships when people (or you) eventually move on?

Have you changed the way you approach relationships since becoming an expat?

What has been your biggest challenge in building or maintaining friendships in Indonesia? Any advice to share?

Thank you for your contribution,

Cheryl

I don't really care about making friends with either local or expat people in Indonesia, although when I was single it was different as local friends are really easy to find when you are an expat. Some of the expats I have met here turned out to be twats or just disappeared, perhaps died or returned home or moved elsewhere. I don't miss them.

Being married with kids, I just don't find local people interesting enough to be friends with. I mean what is the point? Having a family and a few friends back home is enough for me. Actually all my life I've never really needed friends. But sure, there are cultural difference. There's a small restaurant near where I live and two Chinese guys who speak English like to talk with me. They talked about wanting to do business, but I see right through them and have zero interest. They'll talk about anything no matter how unimportant.

Since I've spent most of my life living overseas, I have a very few close friends and we continue to be friends. A few others from work or university are not close at all.

I don't care about making friends with expats here in Indonesia. In my opinion, most of the expats here think a lot about themselves and are not very genuine.

Basically I am not really interested in making new friends, either local or expat. Family and my closer friends from home as well as my siblings is enough. Probably young single expats might feel differently.
