How to run AC cheaply ?

I am new and never been to Dominican Republic. My wife has. We are in process of purchasing a 3 bedroom house in Bravos.聽 The house has 4 AC units.聽 From what I seen online cost of living articles AC can cause very high electric bill. It also stated Americans need to learn better way of using AC.聽

My question is what is the best way to use AC to keep house cool but not have a $1,000 electric bill.

First you want an "inverter" style air conditioner!聽 聽They are more energy efficient.

Always use ceiling fans when you run your a/c.聽 It helps you feel cooler so you use聽 higher temps on the air con units.

In all my bedrooms I use black out curtains,聽 they stay closed聽 24/7 to keep out the heat and the light!聽 I keep my bedroom door shut all the time!聽 My bedroom stays cooler that way and I use less a/c.聽

Hope those聽 help.

What Planner said!

Also, try running your unit on dehumidify - it's more energy efficient than AC and is often all you need. Even during the hottest months, we often just needed to lower the humidity to have the bedroom cool enough for comfortable sleep.

@ddmcghee

I do that often and it does make the room much more comfortable.

Great idea! I will try this.

@planner

This is very insightful. I will get some black curtains to keep out some of this heat 馃サ and the ceiling fans along with the AC. Thanks for the tips!

Make sure they are "black out" curtains hon not necessarily black. 馃馃

Fixed sunscreens are also a way to keep direct sunlight (and rain) out.

@Scott Holmes

Getting a solar system is about the only way.聽 The other suggestions are good, and may help reduce bills by a few bucks,

Otherwise with all that AC, you will be spending聽 a LOT of money with the power company.

A solar system to run 4 AC units is going to be a big solar system

Is it just you and your wife?聽 If possible, don't run AC during the day, use ceiling fans and just run AC at night in the bedrooms where anyone is sleeping.
