AIMA - Permanent Residence Certificate after CRUE for EU citizens

If you have lived in Portugal for 5 years with an EU citizen registration certificate (CRUE), you qualify for a Permanent Residence Certificate.

From 1 July 2026, AIMA allows European Union citizens (+ Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) and their family members to apply for or renew their Permanent Residence Certificate and Permanent Residence Card directly via the online Renewals Portal.

This service has replaced the previous paper-based application process. The process is simple and centralised:

1. Access the Portal: Log in to the AIMA Renewals Portal.

2. Register: Register using your details to create your account.

3. Submit your details: Complete the application and attach the necessary documents, such as your passport and proof of residence.

4. Pay the fee: Pay the issuance fee directly via the platform.

5. Biometric data: If AIMA needs to take your fingerprints, you will be contacted to book an in-person appointment at an AIMA branch.

This procedure applies only to permanent residence. For other types of documents or applications for family members, you may need to use AIMA鈥檚 traditional booking system.
