I did get that I had to go in person with the documnets once physically in Spain,

Although I thought I could download the papaer in order to fill them in and go to the appointment with everything ready but got stuck with the website chasing my tail.

the links above are right, but the hard part is the cita system itself is broken most of the day. slots get released in the morning and disappear in minutes, so sit on the page around 8am and keep refreshing. and don't only check your nearest office, cycle through the other comisar铆as, a slot in a town 30 min away beats waiting a month for the one next door. if you're non-EU you're on the EX-15, pay the 790-012 at a bank first and bring the stamped receipt or they turn you away. print two copies of everything, they keep one

If you're Italian you enjoy Freedom of Movement and thus the right to move to Spain for any reason. The process you probably should do is the EU Citizen Registration which makes you a legal resident of Spain. They'll issue your NIE and it appears on your EU Citizen Registration Certificate (hence the common name "Green NIE").

I had a similar experience.

I first tried to apply for a NIE online and even through the Spanish Embassy in Berlin, but neither option worked out for me. In the end, I went directly to a **Polic铆a Nacional** office in Spain. The whole process was surprisingly straightforward, and I received my NIE within a day.

One thing that often causes confusion is that people talk about "the NIE" as if it's just one document. In reality, there is a difference between the **white NIE certificate** (just the foreigner's identification number) and the **green EU registration certificate** ("green NIE"), which also confirms your residence status in Spain.

Getting the **white NIE** is generally not difficult. Spain is happy to assign a NIE because it is needed for many administrative and financial procedures.

The **green certificate**, however, has become much more difficult to obtain. To register as a resident, you normally need to prove that you are working, self-employed, or have sufficient financial means, and you must also show that you have valid health insurance.

So if you only need a NIE number, don't worry too much鈥攖he process is usually much easier than many people expect.
